If you have been trying to book a round at Bali Beach Golf Course in Sanur — the nine-hole course on the grounds of the old Bali Beach Hotel — this page explains what happened to it, why so many travel sites still list it as open, and where to play instead.

We are Bali Golf Tours, a local golf operator based in Denpasar arranging rounds on this island since 2008. Sanur is fifteen minutes from our office; we watched this one go.

Where to play golf in Bali instead

As of August 2026, Bali has four golf courses, three of which are open for play right now. None of them are in Sanur — the open courses sit on the Bukit Peninsula south of the airport, and one is up in the mountains at Bedugul. If what you wanted was a short, relaxed round like Sanur's, Bukit Pandawa is the closest thing to it.

Bukit Pandawa Golf and Country Club golf course, Bali

Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club

Closest to a short Sanur round

Eighteen par-3 holes on the Ungasan clifftops, with an ocean backdrop on practically every tee. It plays in about the time a relaxed nine used to take in Sanur, it does not demand your best golf, and the setting is on a completely different scale. The nearest thing Bali now has to a casual round.

Handara Golf and Resort golf course, Bali

Handara Golf & Resort

Mountain golf, cool air

An 18-hole, par-72 mountain course laid out inside an extinct volcanic crater at Bedugul in north Bali, ringed by forest and framed by the famous Handara gate. Cool enough that you will not be looking for shade — a long way from the coast, and worth the drive.

What happened to Bali Beach Golf Course?

The course opened in 1972 as the Grand Bali Beach Golf Course, part of the Bali Beach Hotel — the first international hotel on the island. It was nine holes, par 36, about 3,560 yards, threaded between the hotel grounds and the bypass, and it was where a great many people played their first and only round in Bali. It was upgraded in 2004 and reopened the following year as Bali Beach Golf Course, with a clubhouse and a driving range.

In 2021 the Indonesian government designated the site — roughly 41 hectares of state-owned land around the hotel — as a Special Economic Zone for health tourism. The golf course was the space that made it possible. It closed, and in December 2021 President Joko Widodo broke ground on the Bali International Hospital, built on the fairways. The hospital and the wider zone were formally inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto on 25 June 2025.

The practical answer for a golfer: there is no golf course in Sanur, and there is no prospect of this one returning — the land is built on.

What happened to Bali Beach Golf Course
YearWhat happened
1966The Bali Beach Hotel opens in Sanur — the island's first international hotel, and for years its tallest building.
1972The Grand Bali Beach Golf Course opens on the hotel grounds: nine holes laid out among trees that are now as old as the hotel itself.
2004–2005The course is taken over and upgraded, reopening as Bali Beach Golf Course with a new clubhouse and a driving range.
2021The course closes. In December, President Joko Widodo breaks ground on the Bali International Hospital, built on the golf course land.
2022–2024The hotel shuts for redevelopment and reopens in 2024 under a new name, Meru Sanur. The wider site — about 41 hectares — is designated the Sanur Special Economic Zone (KEK Sanur) for health tourism.
2025President Prabowo Subianto inaugurates KEK Sanur and the Bali International Hospital on 25 June.
TodayThere is no golf course in Sanur. The land is a hospital and a health-tourism district, and no tee times can be booked at Bali Beach Golf Course.

Why travel sites still list it as open

This is the part that catches people out. Search for the course today and you will find current-looking pages on major travel and golf-booking sites showing green fees, opening hours, caddie rates and a booking button. Some list it as nine holes, some as eighteen. They have simply never been updated — the course closed quietly, without the coverage a famous course would get, and nobody went back to take the listings down.

Two things keep them looking plausible. Reviews and photos from before 2021 are still attached to them, and there is still driving-range activity on part of the remaining land, which reads to a passer-by like a working golf facility.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: you cannot book a round at Bali Beach Golf Course through anyone, including any site currently offering to sell you one. If a listing quotes you a green fee for Sanur, it is quoting a 2021 price for a course that no longer exists.

Bali Beach Golf Course – frequently asked questions

Can I still play Bali Beach Golf Course in Sanur?

No. The course closed in 2021 and the Bali International Hospital was built on the land. There are no green fees, no tee times and no visitor access, and no tour operator can book you a round there.

Why do travel websites still show Bali Beach Golf Course as open?

Because those listings were never updated. The course closed without much coverage, and pages on travel and golf-booking sites still carry pre-2021 photos, reviews, opening hours and green fees. They are out of date, however current they look.

Is there any golf course in Sanur now?

No. Sanur has had no golf course since Bali Beach closed in 2021. The open courses are on the Bukit Peninsula, south of the airport, and at Bedugul in the mountains.

What was built on the Bali Beach Golf Course site?

The Bali International Hospital, together with the wider Sanur Special Economic Zone (KEK Sanur) for health and wellness tourism - about 41 hectares of state-owned land around the old Bali Beach Hotel, which itself reopened in 2024 as Meru Sanur. The hospital was inaugurated in June 2025.

Which Bali golf course is closest to a nine-hole round?

Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club. It is eighteen par-3 holes rather than nine full ones, but it is short, walkable and relaxed - the closest thing on the island to the quick round Sanur offered.

How many golf courses are open in Bali?

Four: New Kuta Golf Course, Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club, Handara Golf & Resort and Bali National Golf Club. Bali National is currently closed for renovations, so three are playable at any given time. Listings that count five or six are including courses that have closed.
